Study Guide for Chapter 4

Alternative to the t-tools

I will group the skills and understanding you should have from each chapter under three headings; Basic, Intermediate and Advanced. These correspond to what I think qualifies as a basic, intermediate and advanced understanding of the material covered in the chapter. On the midterm, 70% of the points available will be for Basic understanding, 15% for Intermediate and 15% for Advanced. Advanced understanding may also be tested by asking you to apply Intermediate and Basic understanding in a novel way.

Basic

For the five tests (Wilcoxon Rank Sum, Levene’s Test, Welch’s t-test, Sign Test, Wilcoxon Signed Rank test), you should be able to:

  • Say whether the test is used for two independent groups or two paired groups.
  • State the null hypothesis for the test.
  • State the difference in assumptions relative to the corresponding t-tool (two-sample or paired t-test).
  • Say whether the test is resistant to outliers.

For the Wilcoxon Rank Sum, Sign Test and Wilcoxon Signed Rank test you should also be able to:

  • State and calculate (on small examples) the test statistic.

Intermediate

Identify appropriate tests from a study description.

Understand why the difference in means doesn’t tell the whole story in the unequal variance case.

Advanced

Understand the difference between an exact and approximate p-value (I won’t ask you to calculate either in an exam.)
